About the test

What is the INSTI HIV Self Test?

The INSTI HIV Self Test is a CE-certified rapid home test that detects antibodies to HIV-1 and HIV-2 from a single drop of blood. Manufactured by bioLytical Laboratories in Canada, it uses the same proven testing technology used in clinics — adapted so you can use it confidentially at home.

Clinical performance data published by bioLytical show 100% sensitivity and 99.8% specificity in an untrained user study (95% CI 99.3%–100% for sensitivity, 99.2%–99.9% for specificity). The test is intended for adults aged 18 or older. As with any rapid HIV test, a reactive (preliminary positive) result requires confirmatory laboratory testing through a healthcare provider — we explain what that means in the Understanding Your Result section.

100%
Sensitivity Sensitivity = the test's ability to correctly identify people who have HIV. 100% means that out of 1,000 people with HIV, the test would correctly detect all 1,000 in this study.
99.8%
Specificity Specificity = the test's ability to correctly identify people who do not have HIV. 99.8% means that out of 1,000 people without HIV, the test would correctly identify 998. The remaining 2 may show a false reactive result requiring confirmatory laboratory testing.

From the untrained user performance evaluation published by bioLytical Laboratories (95% CI 99.3%–100% sensitivity, 99.2%–99.9% specificity).

How it works

Three steps. About 60 seconds.

Watch the short instructional video, or follow the steps below. The full Instructions for Use are included in every kit.

Collect a drop of blood

Use the lancet from the kit to prick your finger and place a single drop of blood into Bottle 1.

Mix the solutions

Shake Bottle 1, then pour Solution 2, then Solution 3 — in order. The kit explains each step clearly.

Read your result

A clear result appears in about 60 seconds. Two dots in the test window means reactive; one dot means non-reactive.

Step 1, collecting blood: six sub-steps showing how to use the lancet for a finger prick and place a drop of blood into Bottle 1
Step 2, testing: shake and pour Bottle 1, then Bottle 2, then Bottle 3 onto the test device

What your result means

Understanding your result.

The INSTI HIV Self Test gives one of three possible results. Here's what each one means.

INSTI result window showing one blue dot (control only) — a non-reactive result
Non-reactive

Likely no HIV detected

No HIV antibodies were detected. In most cases this means you do not have HIV. However, if your possible exposure was within the past 21–84 days, antibodies may not yet be detectable.

If you are testing within the window period, retest after 84 days to be certain.

INSTI result window showing two blue dots (control + HIV) — a reactive result
Reactive

Preliminary positive — confirmation needed

HIV antibodies were detected. This is a preliminary result, not a diagnosis. A reactive self-test must be confirmed by a healthcare provider through a laboratory blood test before any conclusion is drawn.

Modern HIV treatment is highly effective. Early diagnosis means you can start treatment, live a long healthy life, and reach an undetectable viral load (U=U).

INSTI result window with no control dot — an invalid result
Invalid

Test could not be read

If no dot appears in the control area, or the result is unclear, the test is invalid and cannot be interpreted. This may be due to insufficient blood, mixing error, or an expired kit.

Retest with a new kit. The 2-pack is useful if you want a backup at hand.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions.

Quick answers to the questions most people ask before testing.

How accurate is the INSTI HIV Self Test?
In an untrained user study by bioLytical Laboratories, the INSTI HIV Self Test showed 100% sensitivity (95% CI 99.3%–100%) and 99.8% specificity (95% CI 99.2%–99.9%). A separate study calculated specificity at 99.5%. A reactive result must always be confirmed by laboratory testing.
How long after exposure should I test?
The window period for antibody-based self-tests is typically 21 to 84 days after possible exposure. Testing too early may give a false negative because antibodies have not yet developed. If you are testing within the window period, retest after 84 days to be certain.
What does a "reactive" result mean?
A reactive result is a preliminary positive — antibodies were detected. It is not a diagnosis. A reactive self-test must be confirmed by a healthcare provider through a laboratory blood test before HIV is diagnosed.
Is the delivery discreet?
Yes. The package is plain and unmarked — there is no reference to HIV testing on the outside. Billing on your statement reads "Oneself", which does not identify the contents.
Does the test detect both HIV-1 and HIV-2?
Yes. The INSTI HIV Self Test detects antibodies to both HIV-1 and HIV-2 from a single drop of blood.
Can I take the test if I am taking PrEP?
Antibody-based self-tests can be used while on PrEP, but interpretation can be more complex. If you suspect recent exposure or have symptoms of acute HIV infection, contact your healthcare provider — laboratory testing may be more appropriate.
What if the test result is invalid?
If no dot appears in the control area, the test is invalid and cannot be interpreted. This can happen due to insufficient blood, a mixing error, or an expired kit. Retest with a new kit. The 2-pack is useful if you want a backup at hand.
How long does the result stay valid?
Read your result within 60 seconds of completing all the steps. After several minutes the result may become unreliable. Follow the timing in the Instructions for Use that come with the kit.
Is the test available for under-18s?
The INSTI HIV Self Test is intended for adults aged 18 or older. Younger people should test through a healthcare provider, school nurse, or sexual health clinic.
What happens if I test positive?
Confirm the result with your healthcare provider through a laboratory blood test. If confirmed, modern HIV treatment is highly effective. People on treatment with an undetectable viral load cannot transmit HIV sexually — this is known as U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable).
